This year, my life has become more routinized, and I’ve found immense joy in the repetition of small, meaningful actions. The motions of the day—shared connection with family, brisk walks, bathing—anchor me, offering both stability and inspiration.

Two works have deeply shaped my reflections. Watching Perfect Days by Wim Wenders during a flight this year, I was touched by its portrayal of a man’s quiet yet fulfilling existence, centered on simple routines like cleaning, reading, and savoring music. Similarly, revisiting In Praise of Shadows by Jun’ichirō Tanizaki reminded me to find beauty in subtlety, imperfection, and the ephemeral play of light and shadow.

These influences inspired the small paintings featured on my New Year’s card. They explore themes of ritual and routine through fleeting moments of light: the soft glow of dawn, the chill of twilight, the intimacy of winter evenings. Each small piece reflects one of 16 routines that shape my days.

December, 2024

Painted on Arches hot pressed 140lb watercolor paper.
